Sun, bun, run...fun! Rhyming can be so much fun especially when you include the famous Dr. Suess and his stories. The K-Kids worked on onsets (beginning sound of a word) and rimes (ending sound of the word) this week during literacy corners and small group work. This work was also reinforced through a whole group activity where the kids found rhyming matches and wrote words within that word family. The Dr. Seuss literacy activities were complimented with a trip to the Museum of Science and Industry to visit the Dr. Seuss exhibit. There the K-Kids were able to look at original art work done by Dr. Seuss (real name is Theodor Geisel) and learn more about him. They also sat through an Oobleck science experiment that was conducted by one of the museum educators. The kids were so excited about the Oobleck that we decided to make some at Roycemore too! The K-Kids learned about the properties of Oobleck and realized it was both a solid and a liquid creating a polymer. Have your child show you his/her ziplock baggie of Oobleck over the weekend! When your child is finished with it, please do not put it down the drain - just throw away the entire baggie.

While at the museum, we watched the very funny Skippy Jon Jones on stage! The kiddos loved the funny expressions, singing and dancing. To prepare for the show, we read a couple of the stories and attended a fiesta with the JK and Pre-K classes. The kids danced the Mexican Hat Dance, made guacamole, tried beans and cheese on a tortilla, used beans to complete addition problems, played a fun matching game and "wrote on the walls" just like Skippy did in the books! A big thank you to the JK and Pre-K for the invitation!!
The Kindergartners began writing three page stories with a focus on having a beginning, middle, and end to the story. They worked on creating consistent characters, an organized story flow, and a cohesive story. I was soooo impressed with the independence the kids showed when writing. They asked for help when needed, but many of them were able to write entire sentences using prior knowledge of WOW words and stretching out sounds in the words. I am excited to share your child's "library" of written work with you in February!

In math this week we worked with dominos and simple addition stories. The K-Kids played a game to help reinforce math facts. They also learned how to play Monster Squeeze which helps build number sense and knowledge of a number line. I also have Monster Squeeze on my iPad so the K-Kids loved playing the digital version too!
