Inside Out Man and Mr. Bones

This week, the K-Kids began learning about the human body.  We started with the digestive system.  Through stories and an informative Magic School Bus movie, the kids explored how food turns into nutrients and energy as it moves through our bodies.  They learned the importance of teeth and saliva, how the food is squeezed through the esophagus, and the way the stomach uses stomach acids and squeezing action to produce a "soup" of food.  They loved following the food path through the roller coaster of small and large intestines and were very mature as they learned about where the waste goes. :)  The K-Kids made a construction paper man and glued on the different organs involved in the digestive system. These are on display in the classroom!

Once we mastered the digestive system, we moved onto the skeletal system.  Again, through books and a quick Magic School Bus movie, the kids learned about bones, muscles, and joints.  We practiced learning the scientific names of our bones - the patella, sternum, humerus, femur, skull, and phalanges!  The kids loved playing "Ms. S. says" to practice these names.  We also explored and touched a real human skull and learned how the skull was different when we were babies.  The K-Kids created Mr. Bones using bone cut-outs and scissors.  We will add bone facts to our Mr. Bones next week!

This week in math, we studied symmetry.  I introduced the idea by gently placing masking tape down a K-friend's face to show the symmetry in his body and face.  We then placed masking tape across another friend's body and showed how that was not symmetrical.  After introducing the idea, the students looked through magazines and cut out pictures that showed symmetry.  We then made a collage of all of the symmetrical photos.  We also used paints and painted one half of a paper; we folded the paper and patted it down.  When we opened up the paper, a perfect print had been made on the other side, creating a symmetrical painting!  Throughout the week, we also worked on place value to the tens and ones.  We used popscicle sticks to create bundles of 10s and loose sticks for ones.  I showed the K-Kids a number, and they created that number with the bundles and ones (34 = 3 bundles and 4 ones).  We will continue this important concept throughout the year!

Happy Birthday!  Thank you for the yummy cupcakes and Hawaiian Jell-O!
