The octopus is amazing!

The octopus was the focus ocean animal this week!  The octopus is such an unique animal.  It has no bones, three hearts, and a beak!  What makes it quite different is its ability to camouflage and change colors and textures.  It can change to red if it is mad or become spiky to blend in with coral.  We watched a couple of short clips of an octopus swimming and propelling through the water and read many non-fiction books about the octopus!  During Writer's Workshop, the K-Kids wrote two facts about the octopus to include in their ongoing ocean book.

The focus of math this week was creating surveys and bar graphs and subtraction.  The K-Kids thought of survey questions, polled their classmates, and created a bar graph to represent the information - all on their own!  These are on display along the wall with the red cabinets.  We also focused on subtraction - writing the number sentence, listening to a story problem and drawing a picture, and playing a fun subtraction shark game!

The K-Kids had a great time at the play on Wednesday!  It was fun to watch the book - Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day - come alive.  After the show, we discussed ways that Alexander could have solved some of his problems throughout the day and how he could have dealt with his brother who were not making good choices.  I love hearing the K-Kids use their words and come up with such thoughtful and kind ways to solve problems.

We will continue the ocean unit next week with a focus on dolphins and whales!

Enjoying time with our Friday Reading Buddies!
