Shark Attack! :)

The K-Kids LOVED learning about sharks and rays this week!  They dove right into learning about the shark body, the shark teeth, and the many different kinds of shark.  We completed a Venn Diagram to compare sharks and rays, and I was so proud the many connections the K-Kids made between the different animals and the ocean animals to the past units we have studied.  The K-Kids also put their creativity to the test and created underwater scenes.  They had to include either a shark or a ray and write a fact about either animal.  I am so impressed with their details in their pictures and the recall of many shark and ray facts.  Next week we will move into whales and dolphins which I am sure the kids will flip over :)

Math focused on measurement and the 100s chart.  The K-Kids learned why there is a standard unit of measurement and practiced measuring different items around the room with a foot.  We also reviewed the 100s chart and looked for patterns within the chart.  We used an interactive projector program to color different squares on the chart to show the patterns to the entire class.

Writer's Workshop focused on both letter spacing and writing non-fiction text.  The K-Kids added a page to their ocean fact book by choosing two facts to write about sharks.  I am excited to add even more pages over the unit and send home the detailed masterpiece!

We enjoyed a special treat on Thursday for filling the class STAR jar!  The kids worked together to show safe, trustworthy, appropriate, and respectful behavior.  Every time the entire class was caught being "stars," a jewel was placed in the jar.  We filled the jar just in time to watch Finding Nemo on Thursday. They loved seeing many of the animals we have studied and watching Nemo explore the different zones in the ocean!

We also visited the first grade classroom to hear the first graders read the fairy tales that they wrote!  It was so fun to listen to the first graders read their stories.  The K-Kids are really looking forward to next year when it is their turn to dream, plan, write, and draw their very own fairy tale next year!
